New to Midway? This page is designed for you. We hope this page will help you understand what you need to do as the parent of a first year skater.
US Speedskating Membership:
All Midway skaters must be members of US Speedskating. Register them on line at US Speed Skating as a first year member for a discounted price. The membership runs from July 1 through June 30 and will need to be renewed each year.
Meets: Parents register their child for each event. Midway will reimburse the parents for the cost of the meet. Please check back for registration information and deadlines for the events listed below.
John Rose Open- December 10 and 11, 2011 Roseville, MN
Great Lakes- January 14 and 15, 2012 Milwaukee, WI
Zhuikov Cup- February 18, 2012 Duluth, MN- Canceled
Rose Cup- February 19, 2012 Roseville, MN
This event is a fun, team based event with costume contests and various activities such as curling, bucket races, and sled races. Join the fun by coming in costume and stay for a potluck following the races. Skaters and families should plan on arriving at the oval at 10:45 am.
US Nationals- February 25 and 26, 2012 Roseville, MN
Registration is now open for this two day event on the US Speedskating website. Deadline for registering is noon on February 15,2012. Please register your child and the club will reimburse you for the entrance fee.

Weekly races:
GMSA sponsors weekly Pack races on Saturdays and Metric races on Sundays. All Midway skaters are invited to race but are not required to participate. Registration for Saturday races is handled the morning of the races. Registration for Sunday races can be found on the bulletin board at the Oval and skaters should sign up by the Thursday before the race.
Practice Information:
Skaters should be at the oval 30-45 minutes before the scheduled ice time for warm ups with your age group.
Skate sharpening:
Speed skates must be sharpened by hand and not on a grinder. It is recommended that the skates be sharpened every week. Many older Midway skaters will sharpen your child’s skates for a fee. Please inquire with your child’s coach for more details.
Cold Weather Skating:
The club skates whenever the John Rose Oval is open. Skaters should be dressed to handle the weather. On very cold evenings the skaters will take additional warm up breaks. When booking your room, be sure to mention the Pettit National Ice Center to receive a special rate at these hotels.
Country Inn & Suites Milwaukee West Midway Speed Skating Cub has a block of rooms for each Midway sponsored club trip. When making your registration tell them you are will the Midway Club.
