Sami Banat

Hi everyone!

My name is Sami, and this is my 6th year speedskating! I got involved with the novice program way back in elementary school, and progressed to midway, and have loved every minute ever since. My goal for this season is to drop under 40 seconds in the 500 and to also improve my endurance for the 3000 and 5000. I love skating with midway, and am so happy to be part of this family of skaters!

Her favorite race story took place at Nationals in the 2014/15 season, "In our last race--the 800-meter this girl was trying to pass me, but I held my ground and keep fighting and I ended up getting 2nd!!  Another one was when Erin C, Maddie L and me duck tapped [sic] Andre's shoes to the wall (: "

Georgia's father is a speedskater which drew her to the sport. "My mom signed me up and I ended up loving it and being really good (: not to be cocky 🙂 I also love the feeling of going really fast!"

Accomplishments that Georgia shared include a second place at Nationals for the 2014/15 season. She shared, "I never thought I could make it this far but hard work pays off, I also got 49.59 in the 500 meter in a pack race ..."

Mack became a speedskater because, "I've always loved going fast.  I have a need for speed!" "I enjoy racing and competing with other skaters.  I like to see who takes all.  My personal best that I am most proud of is getting my 500 m time to 48 seconds."

Jia Griffiths

Junior C-1

Jia comes from a family of ice enthusiasts, but she is the first speedskater. After she refused to remove her Superman cape and mask while figure skating, her mom was relieved to find the 0val! She has been speedskating since 2009.

Jia trained and attended school in Harbin, China for a year. She has qualified for National Championships in both short track and long track – twice standing on the podium in third place.

The Midway club trip is always a season highlight. Jia loves the fast ice at the Pettit, and sharing ice with Shani Davis. She has her mind set on Personal Bests (PBs) this year.

Calibri">When not at the 0val, Jia can be found at Midwest Karate. Her goal is “to earn my black belt by the time I apply for college.” She plans to study medicine one day… or become a magician.

Jia is in the 6th grade at Yinghua Academy.

Emily Bos

Junior D-2

I was in a figure skating program, and all I wanted to do was to go fast. The figure skating instructors would always tell me that figure skating was all about grace, and that I wasn't allowed to go fast.

My favorite speedster is Bonnie Blair. She is my favorite because I have met her a few times, and she is so nice. She is really sweet.
My favorite super hero is probably Wonder Woman. I really like her because of how tough and self-sufficient she is. She never lets anyone push her around.
If I could wake up tomorrow morning as any animal, I think that I would choose to be a dog because they are both loved by so many people, and they are good at protecting members of their pack whether it is their human pack or canine pack.
A fact about me that others Amy find surprising is that I transferred to speed skating from figure skating.
I think that my favorite memory from speed skating so far was when I was out in Lake Placid for Nationals in 2017, and it was so amazing to walk through the tunnel on our way out to the ice, and I got to see the Olympic Rings that were hanging up when the Olympics were held in Lake Placid. It was like nothing I had ever experienced.
My goal for the season is to qualify for at least one of the American Cups.

Ezra Campbell

Junior D-1

Let's meet Ezra!
What inspired you to become a speed skater?   I wanted to do something different from my brothers.
Who is your favorite athlete and why? Auggie Herman. He is kind to me and he has a positive attitude.
Who is your favorite super hero and why? Batman. He was my cousin's favorite and so he reminds me of Alex.
If you woke up tomorrow as an animal, what animal would you choose to be and why? A white tiger because they are so cool looking.
Share a fact about yourself that others might find surprising I like to fish. You have to be very patient when you fish and I'm not always very patient with other things.
What is your favorite memory with speed skating so far? My skate got clipped and I flew like superman. It was painful but funny.
What is your goal for this season? Getting clap blades.

Teagan Wetteland

Junior D-1

Let's get to know Teagan

What inspired you to become a speed skater? I thought it was cool that you have longer blades than everybody and its a small sport. Not a lot of people know much about it and when I tell people about it, they are surprised and interested.

If you woke up tomorrow as an animal, what animal would you choose to be and why? I would be a very small dog because I am very shy but sometimes I can be very courageous and bold.

What is your favorite memory with speed skating so far? Club trips are really fun. My second year being a speed skater, when we went to Milwaukee during my second year being a speed skater, I remember almost all of the club did a game of hide and seek in the hotel.

What is your goal for this season? Get better at starts and improve in short distance races.
